My first NaNoWriMo update

Before NaNoWriMo started I posted this

This year I have a vague, actually a very vague, idea that came to me ages ago in the form of a couple of scenes that just came into my head and that I thought were cool. I saw it as a script first but think it will work really well as a 50,000 word, straight to the point novel. The storyline will revolve around two teenage charlatan mediums who prey on the vulnerable but end up falling foul of things they never believed existed.

I also mentioned that –

I set myself the challenge of doing 80,000 words instead of 50,000, which I achieved.

The first thing I’ll say is that because I pushed for a much larger word count last year, I’m finding this years pace easily manageable. If anything I feel a little undercooked at this pace and I’m looking to really ramp up the speed and forge ahead over the next four or five days.

I think what’s added to that sensation is that over the last month I’ve been pushing and pushing to just write, write write, hence the massively increased blog output.

In terms of how the story is going, I’m at the point where I’m getting very excited at just what I have on my hands here. The storyline hasn’t deviated but it’s much more of an ensemble piece now and the world of the story is now much clearer in my head. Also, the whole process seems to be a lot smoother and a lot less fraught with anxiety.

I recently finished a 30,000 word novella, as in finished it last month, and I certainly feel as if that was great preparation.

I guess I just feel that as time goes on I’m more and more comfortable dealing with these big prose projects. I’ve said it many times before, but writing scripts is such a different animal to contend with.

Well that’s it for now.
